Average Position

An AdWords metric that compares advertisers’ ads against one another to determine the order ads will appear on the SERP.

Definition

Average position is a metric AdWords uses to compare advertisers’ ads against one another to determine the order ads will appear on the SERP. The highest position is “1.” There is no bottom position. Average position is generally 1-8 for the first page, 9-16 on the second page, and so on. This position fluctuates with ad rank and is most useful for tracking progress and optimizing on the Search Network. Average Position is calculated by finding the average ad position for any given time frame.
